South Africa, today, goes to the polls -- an opportunity to contemplate voting in the Church. The only authoritative votes in a Congregational Church are Church Meeting votes -- which is the members (a diaconate votes only to carry out Church Meeting decisions). I have had the personal policy that the Church Meeting should work (almost) always on consensus -- of course, consensus may need to be revealed through votes. One sets the principle of consensus aside only in case of emergency -- and emergency, in my experience, seldom happens. OBSERVATION: There is a spiritual principle behind this. People vote in a certain way because the Holy Spirit has moved the Church to vote that way. If consensus is lacking, one needs to wait for the Spirit to do His work. Consensus, for me, would probably mean nine in every ten people.
