It is Father's Day in South Africa. My own father died in 2002, at the age of 75. He was a minister and missionary, a farmer's son. One of his greatest moments was as Chief Missionary in the Central
Pacific. He was the only missionary to be appointed head of the
Protestant Church both pre- and post-independence. For this he was
awarded the honorary title of Doctor. He "filled the room" wherever he entered. He was full of humour, despised pretence, and lived sacrificially. He had celebrity friends, an expansive and inventive mind, and all his life developed innovative ideas.
