In 2012, I faced an awkward issue at a Church AGM. I had pledged to put the issue of staff bonuses to our members -- however, this included me. To prove that this was not about me, I formally proposed to the meeting that the minister should not receive a bonus -- only the rest. There wasn't anyone to second my proposal -- rather, there was an outcry -- and I was included in the bonuses. But I wrestled with that afterwards. Would it have been wiser for me to refuse the bonus -- rather than proposing that I not receive it? OBSERVATION: In the Congregational Church, bonuses are regarded as sacred. The reason for this is that they represent a congregation's trust in God's provision.
