It has been shown that the biggest stressor in urban ministry may be a sense of helplessness. I witnessed an extraordinary example of this among fellow-students, all US citizens, when we visited Skid Row, a squalid area of Los Angeles. The response of the students was a profound sense of helplessness and dejection. OBSERVATION: I think that such helplessness frequently exists where one's theology looks to the (human) future for hope. That is, the greatest stressor in urban ministry may be significantly linked with theology. I didn't share my fellow-students' feelings, as I was accustomed to what we saw, through city ministry in Africa.
