Tarawa Big Gun

It's a photo of a friend and me, atop one of the big guns used in the Battle of Tarawa. The Japanese thought they had invincible defences on the island, but of 3 636 Japanese soldiers, only 17 survived. American losses were heavy -- the toughest battle in the history of the Marine Corps -- which sparked protests in the USA. OBSERVATION: The famous missionary Alfred Sadd was executed at the start of this battle. You may click on the photo to enlarge.
