Unfreezing Linux

I use Linux -- a major operating system. Some computers run Linux forever without crashing. However, my own applications freeze from time to time -- surely through overloading my system. If, then, an application freezes, I do Alt-F2, xkill [Enter], and left-click on the offending application.  Is it that easy with Windows or Mac? I don't know. I don't use those operating systems. I do see that Windows recovery in Church can take too long. OBSERVATION: I like Linux very much. One can just get on, without interruptions.
