A Church's Sensibilities

A minister friend recently quoted Emile Durkheim: "No one feels happy all the time. ... It is wrong to believe that unmixed joy is the normal state of sensibility." The same applies to Churches. People have said to me on occasion that all they want is a happy or a comfortable Church. Yet a Church, if it is really doing what it ought to be doing, will experience various emotions, and it is not a sign of disaster if there should be sadness or discomfort. On the contrary, in many cases it may be a healthy sign. If happiness and comfort are all that one expects, this may cause more trouble than it is worth. It is not a realistic expectation, and may lead a Church up the garden path.
