I believe this is the oldest piece of history in Cape Town. It is seen above my old city "parish". It is said that, around 1488, explorer Bartolomeu Dìas and his men climbed the slopes of Lion's Head to add this horizontal cross-piece to a cleft in the rock -- clearly visible here, although not very distinct. Throughout his journeys, Dìas left crosses as markers. OBSERVATION: Son M and I, on the hunch that Dìas and his men could have dropped chisels down the rock face, searched the bottom with a metal detector. We found a very old iron chisel, rusted through. Whether this is linked to Dias, we cannot tell.
