Race And Personal Space

This morning I attended a multiracial Church. As congregants entered the pews and sat down, I estimated the distance between them and the next person in the pew. In five cases, I counted Whites -- who sat down (about) an average 32 cm from the next person. In five cases, I counted Blacks -- who sat down (about) an average - 4 cm from the next person (that's minus 4). Most sat down at a distance closer than 0 cm -- in other words, shoulders overlapped. OBSERVATION: In my "book about us" (see the right hand column), I describe how I needed a mind shift in this area when I married into Black culture.
