Crank Handle Phone

In conversation this week, someone asked whether anyone remembered telephones that had a dial on them. I remember telephones which had a crank handle (pictured). One turned the handle to wake up the exchange, then the exchange connected one with the outside world. I used such phones from boarding school. Once in a while, an operator would interrupt our conversations. An operator interrupted a friend of mine, telling him to stop whining -- boarding school wasn't as bad as all that.
