Most South Africans did not know apartheid at its worst. Last week, I spoke with an 81-year-old woman who had been an apple picker. She said: "I received 20c a day. There was a lot of sunstroke among us. Some died. They could do what they wanted with us. Kick us and trample us. We went to the police. They said, get out of here. We're not wasting our time with this." She repeated over and over: "'n Kaffer se dood is net koffie en brood." Then she fell asleep. OBSERVATION: 20c around 1960 would now be R18.00, which falls beneath the minimum hourly wage in 2020.
