One probably has heard of protection rackets or protection money. This is money one pays to racketeers on a regular basis, who promise one "protection" in return. If one doesn't pay the money, one's "protection" is removed. There was a time in ministry where the Church and I had to think seriously about what to do if racketeers approached us. Racketeers had been making inroads into our area. A Swiss businessman -- some readers might remember him -- was outraged. He refused to pay the money. He rebuked the racketeers. They shot him dead. OBSERVATION: It may not be racketeers. There may be other motives than money, and other kinds of "protection" offered.
