When I developed a high fever last month, and "mighty weakness", the doctor guessed that it might be one of two things: rheumatic fever, or COVID-19. He said he would treat me for rheumatic fever, and if that didn't work, I should go straight to hospital. On the surface of it, there was very little to differentiate the two. I don't know when they discovered it, but it now seems certain that COVID-19 is a problem of the immune system, at least in some cases -- an over-reaction to threat. In the case of rheumatic fever, it begins with an infection which is almost certainly destined to be harmless, but in some people it triggers a wild immune response. In the USA, some doctors are now focused on switching off people's immune response to COVID-19: The Body's Immune System Might be to Blame. OBSERVATION: In fact, they are now testing drugs on COVID-19 which are prescribed for rheumatic fever.
