Book Editing

I took some time this morning looking at the draft of a book. The author asked for some help. In fact the author and I, at different times, lived on the same remote island in the Pacific. I thought that I would do a final edit, but when I took a good look, the book needed far more fundamental interventions. It needed a shake-up. Once it gets a shake-up, I think things will look a lot clearer for another round. OBSERVATION: I call it "passes".  One passes through a manuscript with only one set of corrections in mind -- next time, one looks at a new set. This book had already been through an editor, but that editor had not, I think, been focusing on the required level of interventions.

POSTSCRIPT: My new protégé writes to a friend, "I have a great shake-up to do with the manuscript, awesome ideas ..."
