Cultural Divide
At seminary in the USA, I said to a professor that our required reading on African Christianity was "sensationalist". It continually focused on the strangeness of African theology and practice. Lately there are more calls for Western seminaries to admit African materials. There are three problems here. Firstly, such materials are all but non-existent. Secondly, they will not be seen as anything other than sensational -- a Western mindset cannot accept what one finds in African materials, although (call them) Western expatriates have been able to do so from time to time. Thirdly, when seminaries do use "African" materials, this tends to be from the African diaspora -- or from enculturated African academics. In other words, not really African. OBSERVATION: Having said this, if one could hear Africa, it has some very valuable things to say.
