How times change. This is a monument to the genius who discovered phosphate on Nauru, and began mining operations there -- Albert Fuller Ellis. Ellis was knighted for his accomplishments, yet they brought ruin to Nauru. According to Wikipedia, the island "was reduced to an environmental wasteland". What were people thinking at that time?
OBSERVATION: The photo was taken around the independence of Nauru in 1968. In the photo are Eritaia, of the Protestant Church of the Gilbert Islands, and Takeiti, my sister's guardian in the mission.
