Flash memory comes in flat packages (for example SD cards) or flat-but-not-so-flat packages (USB drives). These have always been flat. But why should they be flat? One might argue: for reasons of space -- or: for reasons of correct orientation. I don't think this would stand up any more. Say that flash memory devices were cylindrical instead, perhaps with rounded ends, with contacts as shown or turned through 90° -- possibly with automatic recognition of contacts. Such a device could unite cards and drives, and would be easier to handle and use -- perhaps require a smaller receptacle in one's electronic device.
