In the 1990s, I travelled to Central Europe in search of my mother's childhood home in Szczecin (pictured). She gave me the names of the suburb, the street, a nearby forest. But all of this had changed, through WWII. Not one of the names still existed. In fact, all of the names had been thoroughly erased. Not even a shop which specialised in maps could help me. Ultimately I found an older man, a taxi driver, who remembered the names pre-WWII. He took me to her childhood home.
