In April, I blogged that our city neighbour was arrested and "put inside". It was a terrible shock for him. His final act was to hand me his iPhone, so I could co-ordinate some kind of response. On his release, I went over to his place and said let's go over the case. As he showed me a pile of papers, one by one, and described to me what had happened, it was clear to me that there wasn't a case. The warrant officer had had to know this, too. I said, "This will vanish. Guaranteed." And so it did. He was informed that a state witness had failed to respond to a summons -- and failed to respond a second time. Now the witness had committed an offence. That was the vanishing point. OBSERVATION: I asked our neighbour whether there had been any advantage in this for him. He said yes. He wouldn't be unnerved by such things in future.
