The Importance of Ideas
The events we see around us in the world may depend heavily on what might seem to be philosophical trifles: things and relations, is and ought, subject and predicate, and so on. These are things that fascinate me: how to solve the conceptual problems which lie at the heart of real life. But I realised that, in my metaphysic, I mute my fascination -- partly for the reason that renowned thinkers encouraged me to focus on other aspects of my work. I intend now to revise this, to draw out my passion for ideas. Now at seminary, they taught us to see how others have done things. This morning I was surprised to find very little -- in fact, close to no -- treatment of the crucial importance of fundamental ideas, concepts, abstractions.
