Cultural Differences
My wife E and I got together under unusual circumstances. My late wife Mirjam, before she died, instructed me to marry E. At the time, I knew E only in passing. I thought that she was a Cape Coloured, as no doubt most people did -- but she was chiefly of Xhosa descent, through the (Ama) Mpondo, Kwayi, and Mqongwa. We decided, when we married, that we would not try to understand one another. This was a very helpful decision. The cultural differences were bigger than I could have imagined, in every way. I am continually surprised. OBSERVATION: A few of those differences have rubbed off on me, too, and I don't realise it until someone of my own culture looks at me with wide eyes.
