Church and Anarchy

Yesterday a cousin was seriously injured when his truck was stopped, and he was stabbed and his tyres slashed. At the same time, I am reading a book on the anarchy in Europe around 1 000 AD. The Churches held regular Councils, to lay down the law. Then they visited feudal lords, and sought vows from them to keep this law. Of course some lords sent them packing -- but others took the vows. If lords failed to honour their commitment, there was censure. For example, the Churches would not ring their bells.
