Surveying the Scene

Out of curiosity this morning, I timed how fast I track down and assess literary agents. This includes stopping to submit my manuscript, where I believe that there is a chance of acceptance (a figure which I'll keep to myself). It was one agent every two minutes. I sustained that over five hours this morning. OBSERVATION: I came across an interesting assessment of one's chances of being published, by an elderly agent: "The overwhelming majority (95%) of submissions are so hopelessly bad that one shouldn't really include them in any 'significant' statistics. ... If you have genuine ability, persist; the real odds are less fearsome than they might at first appear."
