Yesterday and today, central Cape Town suffered an unexpected blackout -- a long one. Without having tested it, I switched to my "bomb proof" office. I found the first problem three hours later: it appears that the nearby communications tower went down, and my radio link couldn’t reach the next tower. Then, after some ten hours, I switched from smallish batteries to a car battery, ultimately powered off petrol. I powered up a 45W Lenovo computer, and my Samlex (they claim) 500W inverter shut down, reporting overload. OBSERVATION: There has been the debate, all over the world: what happens to emergency services when the power goes down? Not that emergency services are much good unless one can contact them.
POSTSCRIPT: It is now clear that this was a real problem. Who calls whom when the communications tower goes down? My guess is that our communications towers are designed for standard two-hour load shedding, but no more.
