Wanting Something

In city ministry, I had to do, most days, with people who wanted something from the Church or minister. Most of them, I think, were chancers. Any material gain was a win for them—and any way they could get it was licit. There were others who had demonstrable needs, and were honest about them—yet there wasn’t the ambition to progress, and there were limits to the help one could give. There was a small proportion of people in whose cases it was really worth the effort to help, materially. OBSERVATION: But just by looking at them, one couldn’t tell who was who. I developed a method of assessing a situation in a short amount of time—and learnt that doing so can change a whole life. Yet whatever the situation, one can help in some way: spiritually, emotionally, materially.
