Why does a minister wear black robes? I have heard it said that he or she wishes to be set apart from the common people. Yet set apart for what? I was taught that he or she is set apart for death. It is a colour of mourning and death, since, when the minister enters the ministry, he or she dies to self in that ministerial role. One finds something about this on the website Aleteia. It is also said that black robes are a reminder of the need for ministers to live in simplicity and humility. No pinstripe suits, silk ties, expensive watches ... only black. OBSERVATION: This is all the more important, I think, where many congregants are poor. I myself proposed to do away with the black robes once, but this was turned down unanimously by the congregation, if I remember rightly.
