It is interesting that wife E does particularly strong ... one calls it code-switching. Code-switching is to switch languages or language varieties, often depending on the company one is in. In both English and Afrikaans, E radically switches language varieties, depending whether she is in the company of "first peoples" or not. It is as if she has four complete languages -- and Xhosa, her mother tongue, which she seldom uses in full. OBSERVATION: Perhaps most of us do code-switching.
