Alcohol Free(ish)
In all my adult years, I did not hesitate to have a drink. But when I married E, who has her roots in rural South Africa, this completely changed. I am continually reminded of this, when I see alcohol on sale. We "negotiated" our relationship before we married, and in the process it became clear that E's experience with alcohol in rural South Africa was just too painful for her. Particularly in the country, alcohol is a curse, in all kinds of ways. I couldn't be drinking with all the associations of it. OBSERVATION: I still drink if (for example) someone offers me a drink, and she understands -- but in our common life, it is banished, and willingly so.
