A minister will often deal with vastly different situations in the same day. Sometimes my counselling sessions were all of them serious, even weeks at a time. Often they included extreme language, sometimes the remainders of violence. A continual contradiction of ministry is that one may walk out of such situations, straight into situations of great sensitivity or joy -- and vice versa. I was sometimes caught by surprise -- in both directions. Sometimes I walked into a serious situation not being quite ready for the assault. Or I walked into a gentle, joyful situation, not having adjusted myself from the battle that went before.
