I lost a hard drive today, which was a bit of a disaster. It was nearly one terabyte of files. In Southern Africa, one hesitates to hire anyone to fix a hard drive. Once when I did that, the technician told me, "It was taking me too long to recover your files. I stopped and deleted the rest." So I launched my own attempt. I did a File System Consistency Check (FSCK), and fixed one problem. That didn't bring my disk back, though. My second attempt did it. I called up Disks and selected Repair Filesystem.
OBSERVATION: The hard drive was poorly backed up!
