I took this photo of an insect in South Africa's Suurveld. It is a full colour photo. I may have discovered something interesting about insects this month. Every day, they fire the noon day gun in Cape Town. Insects seemed to me to jump in fright just before the bang reached us. Just before? If my observations are not just a series of flukes, then it could conceivably work like this: 1. Sound travels faster through the ground than air, and 2. jumping insects can hear such frequencies. So ground insects could hear the sound before humans do.
