There are in my view -- to put it too simply -- two approaches to being a minister: model Christ, or point to Him. I take the second approach -- which does not, however, exclude the first. Christian leadership theorist Walter Wright, in his book Relational Leadership, considers: “It is to the God who holds on to us that we point people when we seek to exercise leadership as Christians.” OBSERVATION: More than that, I think it makes a big difference whether one reads something in a book, or has a person attesting to it -- namely the minister or pastor: above all, attesting to God's Person, and His deeds past and present. Here is an example of the modelling approach. Henry and Richard Blackaby: “The minister’s activities are grounded, first, in the minister’s character.” In a sense this is true, but that word “first” troubles me.
