Pacific Ablutions
I was reminded again today of the "privies" we had in the Pacific, when I was a boy. One walked to a house on high stilts above the lagoon for one's ablutions -- balancing on coconut logs to get there. I still recall the time my father first taught me to use one of these places: balancing on the logs, and then the hole in the floor, and what seemed like a vast distance between that hole and the lagoon below it. I had a playmate who slipped on such logs, and was killed. These privies were outlawed many years ago. OBSERVATION: Imagine the challenge, for new missionaries. The more I think on it, the more I admire my parents' fortitude.
