‘It Was Pride’

Following the close of my ministry in Sea Point, Cape Town, the Church went into steep decline. I said plainly that those who proposed to drive the Church after me would do just this. An old man was angry with me, and demanded to know: Why, why, I demand that you explain it, now! He is still there, and he sees now what happened. They had grand plans. They would bolster the Church's income, increase attendance, reorganise the youth, increase the number of young adults, expand the women's work, have more Bible studies, and so on. The truth is, at the end of my ministry, although it was somewhat chaotic (as always), it was going like a bomb, and my last financial year was the Church's best in decades. I knew what to do. But one by one, they dismantled the Church's activities and organisation, taking it now to the brink of (the congregation's) closure. My mother -- who was the minister's wife there before me -- following my tenure, was silent. As I remember, she said only one thing about the decline:

"It was pride."

Most of the photos in the collage were taken during my last six months.
