Paper Theft

Paper theft may be a problem in ministry. What I mean is the theft of significant papers with writing on them. Over the years, our Church attorneys took it very seriously. It can happen in meetings, through raids, through cunning. There may be various reasons why it happens. This is my own experience of what to do, taking attorney advice into account:

• Register the theft internally. Report it. Minute it in detail.
• Register the theft with attorneys. Memo, affidavit, witnesses.
• Lay charges for the theft, with the police.

OBSERVATION: With regard to charges, this prevents the papers from turning up in some unexpected place. But this may not be plain sailing. Charges for purloined papers? Where's the harm? Where's the injury? The police may sometimes find it hard to understand.
