A long time ago now, I designed the EPE Mini metal detector, which fitted in a small pill box (pictured). The search coil and a piezo sounder were at the bottom of this box.
OBSERVATION: It couldn't be done any smaller today and still be within the ability of amateur constructors. However, its sensitivity could be boosted enormously through
regeneration -- as I showed recently in two designs in Silicon Chip magazine. The EPE Mini was inherently limited by its BFO design. Now all that changes, with
regenerative BFO.
POSTSCRIPT: If anyone wants to try the sensitivity boost, look at the coil section, and take a resistor (first try around 200K) from the output to the input.
