Loer

I have known it since the mission in my youth: children like to peep at the White man (the Afrikaans word is stronger: "loer"). They peep through windows, peep behind screens, peep through cracks. One young girl in particular has pushily insisted on peeping at me -- even when I was having my "soldier's bath". I've shouted at her, flicked her with a towel, spoken with her parents ... but she's been like a moth to the flame. This morning I took her by the hand and told her that she shouldn't "loer". Did she understand that? Yes, she said, she understood. OBSERVATION: Now we have a deal! I hope! (There are incidentally no doors).

POSTSCRIPT: No such luck.
