I received, this morning, the latest abstracts of the Oxford Journal of Applied Linguistics. Surprisingly, the journal discusses preaching -- specifically, the "turn to the listener". What is it that the listener wants to hear? Yet far from this leading to "itching ears", it is interesting in general that listeners want substance. They want the Word of God -- seriously expounded. OBSERVATION: The turn to the listener is valuable up to a point I think, but such a turn or no, it is the Holy Spirit who applies the Word -- or does not -- in spite of the preacher sometimes. The last recorded words of the apostle Paul express such sentiments.
