A psychologist wrote to me recently (we were corresponding as editor and writer) that chronic pain may severely affect one's emotional state. I said that, from the point of view of pastoral counselling, depression is closely connected with people's thoughts turning
inward -- and there are certain events which cause their thoughts to turn inward -- a decline in health being a classic example. He wrote: "I found your words to be profoundly true when it comes to turning inward ..." OBSERVATION: It stands to reason that a lot of depression is cured, then, as people's thoughts turn outward -- and that has a lot to do with a living relationship with God.
