Over on Facebook, there has been enormous interest in this book (pictured), which I am revealing as I have time. It is in a fairly ruinous condition as one sees, but not so that one can't recover the text. It contains the stories of each of the Gilbert Islands (part of the larger Kiribati Republic), as they were handed down from generation to generation before the ancient tradition of memorising them was compromised. There are some other copies of this book in the world, although they are not readily accessible for Gilbert Islanders. Mine is the author's own copy, with her handwritten notes inside. OBSERVATION: The book's saving grace is tough paper, characteristic of the London Missionary Society. If it were printed on uncoated paperback paper, it would probably be done for.
