It is a painting of my grandfather -- surname Olivet. He was German, yet the surname is French. Our forebears were Huguenots, who fled a great persecution in France. Though the details are now lost in time, the Germans received the Olivets and assimilated them and enabled them to prosper. This is a so-called warts-and-all painting. It shows some scars on my grandfather's chin, which he received through a sword fight.
POSTSCRIPT: I have since learned that the renowned painter Richard O'Mant corrected the mouth of the portrait, guided by photographs.
