Predicting Divorce

Someone asked me yesterday whether one may predict that a marriage will fail. That is something one may read about on the Internet -- some of the warning signs being negativism, neglect of one's spouse, avoidant behaviour, or high expectations. However, in my ministry experience, some of the most tender marriages have ended in disaster, while some of the most turbulent have endured -- to the extent that I have been completely surprised. It cannot be predicted "on the face of it".

POSTSCRIPT: Lately, much of the trouble is said to have to do with ethnicity -- which may not be what one thinks. Couples think they are the same because they were neighbours, or come from the same city, and so on. But today this may not be so at all. A failure to understand ethnicity predicts conflict.
