Commination Service

One would be forgiven for not knowing what this is. One of my father's favourite services was the Commination, here in the 1552 liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer. It is still there, basically unchanged today. The Roman Catholic Breviary, however, has removed imprecatory prayers. You may click on the text to enlarge.

In the South African Book of Common Prayer there was a "Devotion" for Ash Wednesday, which was a somewhat watered down version, which I saw used quite a lot 60 years ago.

I see the edition I have on my shelf is ... 59 years old, although it looks brand new. Yes, Ash Wednesday it is. Apparently the UK edition is still the same, so one could yet surprise parishioners with it!
