The counselling one learns in seminary tends to be quite abstract. In reality -- all the more so in urban ministry -- one is faced with vastly different situations. A wife is troubled that her husband is a little uncommunicative, or a husband has been hospitalised due to the murderous impulses of his wife. One person wants to know whether God exists, or another is convinced that a minor ritual has placed his family under a spell. A man may wrestle with how to rearrange millions of rands of debt, or a woman is arrested for stealing a small piece of food.
