Writing Sermons
My sermons have usually been 3 000 words -- and I type them out in full -- although I improvise a little once I have the text in front of me in the pulpit. Sometimes sermons are quick in brewing, long in writing -- sometimes they are long in brewing, quick in writing. "Quick in writing" may mean 3 000 words in an hour. "Slow in writing" may mean a day. OBSERVATION: One is taught in seminary: one minute's sermon takes one hour's preparation. If I feel inspired, I find that it works best for me to sit down immediately, to write a sermon as it "falls on me". In a few hours' time, the inspiration may be gone.
