Employment As An Act Of Love
The Congregational Church takes a unique view of ministerial "employment". Rather than employing a minister (from the Latin implicare, to enfold) it sets him/her free -- to follow the call of God. When this is properly understood, it is, I believe, an act of love. It seeks to set a minister free from all the impediments and cares that might slow or dampen his / her ministry. OBSERVATION: The position is stated, for example, in the 'textbook' on evangelical Congregationalism, Evangelical & Congregational: "A Church does not employ a
minister. It releases him from the need for secular employment."
