One of my final endeavours of the old year was to get lights and water to work in our cottage -- off sun and stream. This meant charging a battery by the sun, depositing an electric pump by a stream, unrolling a long hosepipe through the woods, and working various water valves and crocodile clips -- while the builder chased a few water leaks. It was a chore before I found some kind of a balance for the system, but it seemed in the end that the house had lights and water, and we had (provisionally) a functioning whole. See also
