Christmas Presents In Africa
I have new Christmas traditions since I "married into Africa". Christmas presents generally do not feature, unless one is speaking of a sheep, or a steel pot, or something with an immediate purpose. In fact presents may be problematic with children, since there isn't a culture of "This one's for you, and this one's for you." It is presents for all or none. Anyway, I bring my European traditions to Africa, and I buy presents anyway, for adults. This is very easy. I simply buy something in the city that one won't find on the farm, or anywhere nearby. And I look for things which are unheard of on the farm: a magnesium lighter, for instance, a potato gun, or a Fresnel lens.
