There is a strange test of faith which comes, I think, with retirement. One can retire from the fray, or one can remain engaged -- which is, one can care about the world, even at risk to oneself, and show it. If people retire from the fray, it may be an indication I think that they were always in it for themselves.
OBSERVATION: I described this in one of my essays. Some of the greats of Church history had their greatest trials and triumphs in retirement.
