"Broad Church" Boom
Within the first few years, after I started in urban ministry (the year that apartheid ended), I saw a changing Church. Among other things, we were seeing an influx of other denominations and cultures. I and a few key players sought to shift the Church from a tight theological focus in particular, to something broader, which in fact was happening in the Congregational Church worldwide. I called it a "united Church" position. It was a more accommodating position. However, it still was conservative, and it incorporated the old. The Church saw a boom, and I attributed it in large part to this. OBSERVATION: We thrashed it out in detail, and it was a very hard transition, but if my analysis is correct, it secured the Church's future.
